Effects of a community-based recreational therapy balance exercise program for individuals with Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease, which produces motor symptoms that increase the fall risk to those individuals living with PD. The focus of this study is the application of recreational therapy static and dynamic balance interventions with the aim to maintain and improve the balance, feelings of safety associated with risk of falling, and overall functioning for individuals living independently in the community with PD. The results of this study indicate that the recreational therapy interventions aided individuals living independently in the community and the ability to maintain their current level of independence. The lack of statistical significance provides insight to recreational therapy interventions, which were successful in maintaining function.
